Ex - Post Algorithmic Probability

چکیده

Classical Probability theory is badly equipped to compute the probability of unique events, as it lacks the means to determine the relevant class to which the event belongs. Algorithmic Probability is designed to deal with individual events. It computes the chances that a given event will be output by a universal computing machine fed with random programs. This definition, however, fails to detect what makes an event noticeable. All non-trivial events are therefore assigned probabilities close to zero. The definition of probability proposed in this paper determines remarkable aspects of a situation ex post (after the fact). Contrary to Algorithmic Probability, it computes probability by considering a difference in complexity. Improbable situations are situations that are simpler to describe than to generate. This definition of probability leads to a new notion of information.

Probabilistic Sufficiency and Algorithmic Sufficiency from the point of view of Information Theory

‎Given the importance of Markov chains in information theory‎, ‎the definition of conditional probability for these random processes can also be defined in terms of mutual information‎. ‎In this paper‎, ‎the relationship between the concept of sufficiency and Markov chains from the perspective of information theory and the relationship between probabilistic sufficiency and algorithmic sufficien...

Equivalences between learning of data and probability distributions, and their applications

Algorithmic learning theory traditionally studies the learnability of effective infinite binary sequences (reals), while recent work by [Vitányi and Chater, 2017] and [Bienvenu et al., 2014] has adapted this framework to the study of learnability of effective probability distributions from random data. We prove that for certain families of probability measures that are parametrized by reals, le...

Information Projection: Model and Applications.∗

Evidence from both psychology and economics shows that people exaggerate the similarity between the information they have and the information available to others. I present a model of such information projection by assuming that after processing a signal a person overestimates the probability with which this signal is available to others. I apply the model to agency and communication settings. ...

Inefficiency of equilibria in query auctions with continuous valuations RM / 09 / 024

Query auctions are iterative auctions in which bidders have to select in each round an action from a finite set. We show that, when bidders have continuous valuations, any ex post equilibrium in an ex post individually rational query auction can only be ex post efficient when the running time of the auction is infinite for almost all realizations of valuations of the bidders. Thus, when valuati...

Discretionary disclosures using a certifier

This paper studies two disclosure regimes when a firm with superior private information must rely on a strategic certifier to disclose credibly its prospects. In the ex ante (ex post) disclosure regime, the firm must decide on whether to hire the certifier before (after) observing the certifier's noisy assessment. Endogenously determined certification fees can actually cause the disclosure prob...
